How it works

Three ways to check your food

However you shop or eat, there's a quick way to get your answer.

1

Scan the label

Point your camera at the ingredients list on the pack. BantSmart reads it and gives you a verdict in seconds.

2

Snap your plate

Eating out or at a braai? Take a photo of your plate and see how it stacks up.

3

Search anything

Type in a food and get the answer straight away.

More than a scanner

Everything you need to stay on track

Checking food is just the start. Track your carbs, log your meals and watch your progress, all in one place.

Track your carbs

See today's carbs against your phase target at a glance, so you always know how much room you have left.

Log your meals

Ate what you scanned? Turn it into a meal with one tap and it counts towards your day.

See your progress

Look back over your week and see which days you stayed under target.

Scan your food

Point your camera at a label or snap your plate and see where it lands on the lists, in seconds.

Searching foods stays free. No catch. Go premium only if you want unlimited scans.

Shape what's next

BantSmart grows with you. Anyone can request a feature right in the app, anytime, and the most wanted ideas shape what we build next.

The Banting phases

Four phases. One that fits you right now.

Banting isn't one size fits all. BantSmart walks you through each phase and shows you where you are, so every scan, verdict and piece of guidance makes sense for your personal goals.

1 week

Observation

Eat like you normally do and log it. We're just getting to know you and your body.

2 to 12 weeks

Restoration

Drop the Red list and fill up on Green. Your body starts running on fat instead of sugar.

As long as you need

Transformation

For when you want to see real change. Mostly Green, low carbs, and your body moves into ketosis.

For life

Preservation

You've found your rhythm. Keep Red off your plate and find the carb level that keeps you feeling good.

The lists

Six verdicts, zero guesswork

Every food lands on one of the six Banting 2.0 lists, shown with a colour and a clear label so it's easy to read at a glance.

Green

Eat as much as you like. Go for it.

Orange A

Fine in small amounts. Keep an eye on portions.

Eish!Orange B

Only now and then, and only small portions.

Light Red

Best kept for rare occasions.

Red

Not Banting friendly. Leave it on the shelf.

Grey

It depends on you. Approach with care.

Two foods with the same name can land on different lists. BantSmart looks at what's in the specific product, not just what it's called.

Local is lekker

Built for South African food

Most food apps don't know what pap or morogo is. BantSmart does. From the products on your local shelves to the plate at Sunday lunch, it understands the food we actually eat.

  • Local products from the shops you know
  • Local plates like pap and wors, chakalaka or a braai spread
  • Local staples from samp to amasi
